Affiliate Marketing Basics

If you’re brand new to the world of making money online, or more specifically, internet marketing, you may have heard of something called “affiliate marketing.” In this article, I am going to tell you everything you need to either get started in this endeavor, or make a decision not to. Because this “job” is not for everyone, there are a few affiliate marketing basics you should be aware of before blindly jumping in head first.

What the Heck Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a great way to generate personal income yourself and your family while still maintaining a certain level of freedom. You get to work from home. You get to work whenever you want. You get to work as much or as little as you want. But at the end of the day, you still have to work. This is a real business that is making lots of folks financially free, but it’s also sent many people running for the hills!

In a nutshell, affiliate marketing is simply promoting someone else’s products in exchange for a commission whenever a sale is made. Unlike owning a brick-and-mortar business, or having your own goods or services to sell online, you never need to process orders, deal with customers, or stock inventory. It is truly one of the most “hands-off” business models to ever exist… well, sort of.

As mentioned earlier, you do need to put in some hours. But if you do affiliate marketing correctly, this can be nothing but fun for you. If you promote the right products, you can even earn residual income streams that can last for years to come, while still building new ones. You can undoubtedly end up hitting a “critical mass” of recurring profits which can allow you to take months off at a time and still earn a great living… for work you did a long time ago!

How Do I Do Affiliate Marketing?

This question has many possible answers, because there are multiple business model options available to you. The business model you select will have much to do with your confidence, investment capital (if any), time, and resources. Also, you may just have a whole lot more fun doing one over another. Therefore, your own personality will have a lot to do with the path you choose.

Here are a few of your options:

* article marketing (free or paid)
* search engine optimization (free or paid)
* video marketing (free or paid)
* email marketing (paid)
* pay-per-click, aka PPC (paid)
* pay-per-view (paid)
* classified advertising (free or paid)
* banner advertising (mostly paid)
* off-line advertising (free or paid)
* mobile marketing (paid)

Again, these are just a few of the more popular ways that affiliates are promoting their businesses these days. If I had to choose one to recommend to a beginning marketer, I would say without hesitation that you should go with search engine optimization (SEO). Of course, I can’t go into all the details of SEO in this one article, but I can tell you that it’s basically the process of getting each of your web pages to show up in Google’s natural search results by targeting very specific keywords that lots of people search for every day.

I hope that didn’t confuse you too badly.
